The Imo State Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, has warned men and officers of the State Command against violation of human rights while carrying out their respective duties, even as he maintained that under his watch, no officer caught violating the rights of individuals, including suspects, will go scot-free.
The State Police Commissioner made the assertion during an enlightenment programme on human rights organized by the Command to educate its officers on the importance of maintaining individuals’ rights while on official assignment.
CP Danjuma, while addressing men and officers of the Command, hinted that the programme is focused on reinforcing operational discipline, improving public trust, and reducing cases of extrajudicial actions.
He also counselled them to always bear in mind that professionalism is not optional but a duty, and any deviation from laid-down rules would be met with strict internal discipline.
Delivering a lecture titled “Human Rights Issues: Handling of Suspects and Other Citizens to Ensure No Breach of Human Rights Occurs,” the Chief Principal Security Officer to the State Government, CSP Shaba Gboyako, focused on educating officers and men of the Command on the importance of civility, restraint, and professionalism in their interactions with members of the public, especially during arrests, interrogations, patrols, and other law enforcement duties.
He emphasized that respect for human dignity must guide all police operations and that any breach of fundamental rights not only undermines the image of the Police but also invites legal and disciplinary consequences.
Expanding on the legal foundation of human rights, Shaba extensively covered Sections 33 to 44 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which include the right to life, dignity, personal liberty, fair hearing, and freedom from torture or inhumane treatment.
He drew from real-life scenarios and case law to explain how human rights violations typically occur in the line of duty and how officers can prevent such lapses through conscious adherence to legal procedures and ethical guidelines.
CSP Shaba also examined the provisions of international human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), emphasizing Nigeria’s obligations under international law.
He urged officers to be guided by the Police Act of 2020, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), and internal Force Orders in all their dealings with suspects and citizens.
In his remark, the spokesperson of the Command, CSP Henry Okoye, said that the Command is using the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and continuous training aimed at repositioning the Police for effective and people-oriented service delivery.
