Members of the Ulakwo Etche Special Squad, a local vigilante group in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, have apprehended a young man, Iheanyi Asobirionwu, allegedly hired by criminals to kill for them.
Asobirionwu is also accused of supplying human parts to criminals for rituals purposes.
In a video obtained by YARN NAIJA, Asobirionwu, was seen making a confession in his language, Etche, while being interrogated by the vigilante group.
YARN NAIJA gathered that the suspect ran out of luck while attempting to strangle his victim, Vicky Nweke, to death.
Asobirionwu reportedly abducted Nweke and choked her until she collapsed.
Believing she was dead, he left the scene to retrieve a machete to slit her throat.
Confirming the incident to YARN NAIJA, the Caretaker Development Committee Chairman of Amakumba Community also in Etche LGA, Kingsley Anyanwu, said while Asobirionwu was away, Nweke regained consciousness and managed to escape.
Anyanwu said Nweke later provided useful information to the local security group, which led to the arrest of Asobirionwu.
He called on security agencies and the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Anyanwu also expressed concern over rising insecurity in the area, noting that people now fear going to their farms due to the activities of suspected ritualists and criminal elements in their communities.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation to uncover those behind the act and ensure that peace and safety are restored.
“We are urging the security agencies, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to make sure there would be proper interrogation and investigation for him to be able to mention those who are behind, because he was sent according to his confession, he was sent by people, so that he would mention those who are involved.
“Because, as we speak, the environment is no longer safe.
“Our old men and women will go to farm and they are won’t stay comfortably, because some of these boys have been turning round the whole place to see whom they will harm.”
In the meantime, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed to Yarn Naija that, “The suspect has been arrested by the police, while investigation is ongoing.”
