Tragedy struck in Gombe State on Thursday as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana lost his life in a fatal hit-and-run incident.
According to reports by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. near the Matrix Fueling Station along Bauchi Road in the Tumfure area of Akko Local Government Area.
ASP Yunana, aged 50, was reportedly attempting to cross the road when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle sped off immediately, leaving the officer critically injured on the roadside.
The late officer was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga, located in Funakaye Local Government Area. Fellow officers and bystanders at the scene rushed him to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was placed on emergency treatment.
Sadly, he was confirmed dead at around 6:50 p.m. that same evening. His body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted.
Security sources revealed that police authorities have launched an investigation and are actively working to identify and apprehend the driver responsible for the deadly incident.
“The police also appealed to the public for information that may aid in identifying the vehicle involved in the fatal incident,” the report added.
Efforts to obtain an official comment from the spokesperson of the Gombe State Police Command, Buhari Abdullahi, were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
The incident adds to a string of recent tragedies involving police officers. Just last month, Superintendent of Police (SP) Mustapha Garba, serving with the Bauchi State Police Command, died in a fatal car crash while on his way to his own wedding.
Garba and three companions were traveling from Gumau to Magaman-Gumau in Toro Local Government Area when their Mercedes-Benz lost control at Bargan Tsamiya and collided head-on with an oncoming Opel Vectra.
